They are often tasked with ensuring that a website is fit for purpose – meaning that it must be aesthetically pleasing and functional. For example, they may update a website to ensure that it is eye-catching and encourages viewers to stick around as opposed to looking elsewhere. However, they must also ensure that the website runs correctly and quickly – without bugs, delays or broken links – as these errors, while seemingly minor, are a great way to drive traffic away from your site. Their work is often informed by data and metrics, which they can use to figure out how users spend time on their website and how often sales are made after they browse.
As you can see, the role of a web developer is varied and changes significantly depending upon the project they are working on. Typically, however, they tend to focus on the more technical aspects of website design and management – such as coding, SEO tactics, or user experience. Whenever an update is introduced to the site, they should also test and troubleshoot these pages before they go live to ensure users get the best possible experience.
